St. Louis Police are investigating a rash of car break-ins near the Grand Basin and Art Hill in Forest Park. Authorities say they also had similar incidents on West Pine in the park.
Thieves smashed windows out of around 30 cars on Sunday night. Police believe the thieves were looking for wallets, purses, electronics and even guns. Officers found several handbags that had been rummaged through and discarded.
On Monday afternoon some of that broken glass was still visible along Lagoon Drive.
These types of break-ins are usually called crimes of opportunity. But Police Chief Sam Dotson said this string of burglaries is more like fishing. Instead of targeting specific cars with valuables in sight, these criminals are busting into random groups of cars and hoping to find anything of value.
Dotson was quick to point out Monday that crime is down overall in St. Louis. But he said car break-ins have actually risen 1.5%.
Dotson says the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is now throwing a number of resources at the problem, including extra patrols, bait cars and even electronic tracking devices.
Officers have already gotten a small break with a suspect description of four men in a black Nissan Altima. One victim told NewsChannel-5 several masked men were involved in the crimes, however police have not confirmed the allegation.

“It’s getting out of control,” Rosario said during his break outside the 138 Wooster St. boutique. “To be honest with you, [shoplifters] have been here six times in six months. This month, they’ve been here three times.”

“That’s how they make their living,” said Rosario, the security guard. “They steal one bag for $1,500 and resell it for $500. They do that a few weeks in Westchester and then a few weeks in Manhattan, and by the time they come back, you’ve forgotten them.”
And until the stores share video of shoplifters among their locations, Rosario says he believes it will keep happening.
Installing security cameras and sharing security footage may not prevent shoplifting, but it would provide police with more information after the fact, preventing a situation like the one this week at Anthropologie, where $1,081 worth of women’s shirts went missing from the shelves at 375 West Broadway. “We’ve had three incidents in the last four days here, but they didn’t get away with the bags. We’re pretty good at making sure our merchandise stays in our store, and not in anyone else’s hands,” he laughed.

Jul B. Dizon anniversary
I have to add that I had the honor of attending the celebration of the 33rd anniversary of Jul B. Dizon jewelry earlier this week at The Peninsula Manila.

But, he lamented, his returns had dropped from more than 30 percent a year to a mere 23 percent. He worried about his personal fortune, which he had built up from nothing to almost 3 billion yuan (about $445 million back then).

Such unrestrained growth naturally worries China’s central bank, which fears that a flood of bad shadow loans could prompt a financial meltdown similar to the U.S. subprime crisis in 2008. A liquidity squeeze in June, when the central bank allowed interbank lending rates to rise to as high as 20 percent before intervening, was widely interpreted as a warning to banks to clean up their shadow portfolios.
China’s shadow bankers are easy to demonize. Like Wang, many are nicotine-stained and seemingly unsophisticated. Their methods are unorthodox, possibly even unsavory. Their loans don’t show up on any balance sheets. They look like a disaster waiting to happen.
I believe these fears are misplaced, and I should know: Eight months after my visit to Hangzhou, I became a shadow banker myself. Since 2011, I have run a microcredit firm in Guangzhou, which provides loans to thousands of small-scale entrepreneurs: florists, restaurateurs, fish farmers, vegetable growers, roadside hawkers.
Although we charge about 24 percent annually for our money, demand remains virtually unlimited. Our customers are too small and too unstable to get traditional bank loans. At the same time, because we keep our loan amounts small ― $20,000 apiece on average ― and because we have close contact with our clients, the business has proved reasonably secure.
