The audience at Tuesday night's Lincoln Center Festival opening of "Monkey: Journey to the West" was rather eclectic. Unlike national potentates, however, Ecclestone has little need for ceremony. There is no excess baggage or artifice to his world or manner. He speaks in plain terms using an economy of words to state precisely what he thinks and feels. He has long sealed deals with a single handshake and adheres to an old-world expectation that a person’s word is their bond.
Ecclestone likes to come to the point and has never seen the need to embellish anything. It’s that kind of brutal efficiency that has marked his time as ringmaster of the F1 circus that has become one of the greatest sporting shows on earth. He was the first to identify the ultimate potential of television to turn F1 racing into a world-wide spectacle, and in the process has made billions from his management and ownership of the sport’s commercial activities.
Ecclestone’s business philosophy is essentially one of challenging you to make a deal with him and see how you fare. After all, when in 2000 he (via his family trust) sold a 75-percent stake in F1’s marketing company, his family trust earned $3.37 billion yet still owned 25 percent of the operation while retaining effective management control of the sport. The German newsmagazine Der Spiegel described this deal recently as a “brilliant coup.”
But today the master dealmaker is under assault on several fronts. In November 2011, Ecclestone was called upon to testify in a Munich courtroom in the trial of Gerhard Gribkowsky, the former BayernLB banker in Germany who oversaw the 2006 sale of F1 to CVC Capital, a private equity fund, which netted the Ecclestone family trust, Bambino Holidings, a reported $478 million profit. Gribkowsky, BayernLB’s chief risk officer, was accused of accepting a bribe of $44 million (27 million) to deliberately undervalue the shares of F1 so that the bank sold the shares for $800,000,000 rather than the more plausible value of $2.8 billion as has been charged in court documents. Gribkowsky was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.

You've been in the business for a long time. To what do you attribute your longevity?
It's understanding that it is minute changes which help develop a brand over time. You slowly add to your collection. [For instance] we didn't introduce sneakers and handbags until this past season. But also it helps that I'm very involved in every aspect of my business from design to production — we even own our factory in Italy! It's this experience that I brought when I worked with Fashion Fringe in 2008 to nurture young talent.
What do you look for in an emerging designer?
Above all, it's talent! The winner, Liam Fahy, spent ten months working in the Italian factories and I provided guidance so he would have a deeper understanding of the business. It's expected he would take that knowledge and work in the industry, or in his case, start his own line.
You waited until recently to delve into bags. What inspired your bag collection?
Brands like Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga, and the like have very classic bags that they make minute changes to season after season. I wanted a bag that would stand the test of time so I developed mine after a bag I used to carry sheet music in as a child. It has strong hardware but it is also simple and looks timeless.
What about your fall 2013 shoe collection?
It's everything from Japanese kimonos to Lalique crystals to thinking about Kill Bill and Hong Kong triads. I was also inspired by masculinity and girls who like to dress like boys in suits and kilts. I used interesting materials like oily surfaced leathers and I had some retro references like the fifties block heel and the pointed pump.
Speaking of a masculine shoe, men don't always get why women are drawn to them. What is appealing about a woman in a mannish shoe?
Mannish shoes imply confidence because they are for the woman who can embrace that Annie Hall, masculine-meets-feminine vibe. But really the definition of accessorizing is that you are adding to any outfit, be it a heel, wedge or mannish shoe. I want to design for a woman who buys things to enhance her wardrobe, regardless of her style.
I read that you name your shoes after daffodils. Can you explain?
I came across a junk shop in London and there was a book of all the names of the different daffodils. There are about 18,000, so I thought "Well, my work is done!" Naming your shoes gives them more of a human quality, they're not just some code number.
Kate Middleton has worn your shoes in the past. What do you think of her style?
Yes, she has worn our shoes before; as you know, she has a very conservative sense of style. So she will choose our gray suede Malone pumps and wear those when she’s not in her nude LK Bennett’s. I don’t think she would be very interested in the more fashion-forward shoes. She seems to be different from her [deceased] mother-in-law who was more involved in fashion.
You've blogged in the past for Vogue U.K. Do you enjoy writing and do you think it's important to be engaged with your customer?
I believe in crafting and writing blog posts. I’m not a Twitter person because the spontaneity and the instant ability that it requires is not for me. I prefer to spend time working on a well-written post and engaging with my customers that way. I’m not big on Instagram either. To give you an idea on how much camo is being used in the U.S. military, here’s a quick breakdown. The Army uses woodland—a streetwear favorite—and desert camo. SPRINGFIELD - For Gianna Mitchell, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, life would not be the same without soccer.
So, when Mitchell, of Springfield, recently realized that many children in poor countries play soccer without the best of equipment, she decided to do something about it.
“My family travels a lot, and when we visited Costa Rica and Mexico, I saw that they love soccer in those places,” Mitchell said. “But, I saw that they didn’t have the right equipment to play. We have so much equipment here, it just kind of made sense to give them what they needed.”
Mitchell, who has played soccer since she was 4, said she decided she needed to do something.
“They didn’t really have shin guards or cleats,” she said. “They were just playing with sneakers, or barefoot.”
Mitchell, a high honors student, heard that Wilbraham & Monson Academy administrator Chris Sparks had a connection with a soccer team in Haiti, so she decided that’s where she would focus her attention.
“I really wanted to help someone else that may not have the luxury to get what they need to play what they love,” she said. “Sometimes you have an idea and you talk about it but you don’t do it. I felt like I needed to get it done.”
Mitchell first sent out an email to family and friends, telling them about her plan. She realized that was limiting her outreach, so she decided to tell administrators at her school, who helped her get the word out.
Mitchell has formed a non-profit, Two-Six for Kicks (26 is her soccer number), through which to collect cleats, shin guards, uniforms and soccer balls. She’s also taking monetary donations. She’s made a lot of progress already.

Golden Harper recognized these flaws years ago while selling shoes in his father’s store in Orem — Runner’s Corner. To put runners in the best shoe for their running mechanics and structure, he videotaped them running barefoot and then in shoes. He was amazed by what he saw.

For years Golden and his father, Hawk, cut up shoes in the back room of Runner’s Corner and dabbled with building a better shoe — the heel of, say, a Nike, with the toe box of a New Balance, combined with the arch of a Mizuno, and so forth. Golden continued to pursue the creation of a better running shoe, eventually consulting a team of Portland-based biomechanical engineers on the project. “We are in year two and we pulled even with Adidas in sales a few months ago,” says Harper. “We are No. 8-ish nationwide, in about 500 stores. We should do about $20 million in sales this year and overtake Adidas and Mizuno.”
For the 30-year-old Harper, a former two-time state cross-country champion at Orem High and the conference 10,000-meter champion at BYU-Hawaii, the pursuit of a better running shoe has been a passion. He and his father recognized a problem with running shoes long before “Born to Run” raised the issue. Over the years, they estimate they sent some 3,000 pairs of their customers’ running shoes to a local shoe repair shop to have the heel sliced open and the foam cushioning removed. There was nothing on the market in which the heel and toe were the same height — running shoes place the heel 12 to 15 millimeters higher than the toe (a 2:1 drop is fairly standard). The Harpers claim Golden coined the popular term “zero drop” to describe shoes that put the toe and heel at the same level.
Harper concluded that not only did traditional running shoes impede proper running mechanics, but they were also injurious. He estimates that half of his father’s customers have bunions, plantar fasciitis, hammer toe and sesamoiditis, among other foot problems, which he blames on the design of running shoes.
“It’s like Chinese foot-binding,” says Harper. “The foot is shaped by shoes and over time there’s damage. Think about it: All the bones in the foot are being manipulated toward the front area of the foot for a beat down.”
The traditional running shoe is largely the creation of the late Bill Bowerman, the former Oregon coach and Nike co-founder who famously created running shoes by pressing foam into shoes with his wife’s waffle iron. Bowerman’s intent was to encourage a long stride in his runners. Believing the best way to do that was a heel-first foot strike, he put the padding in the heel. But a heel strike is both injurious and counterproductive. It means the runner strikes the ground in front of his body, which creates a braking effect with each stride. It also means the body does not absorb the shock of the foot strike as well as a proper mid-foot strike. Anyway, generations of shoe companies copied Bowerman, and most are still doing it more than five decades later.

“She loves chunky boots and has an amazing collection of leather jackets and watches. With me, it’s handbags and shoes that are always top of my shopping list.
“We share our wardrobes with each other, so it’s nice to be able to borrow things and put together new outfits. When we lived at home, our wardrobe took over the spare room. It was completely full of clothes and accessories.
“There was just once recently that we both bought the same outfit. I was living in Ireland for a couple of years and my parents had come to visit me.
“When I met them they were laughing because the floral jumper and skinny jeans I was wearing were exactly the same as the ones Clare had bought a few weeks earlier in Glasgow.”Claire said: “I’m definitely the more casual one. “Lisa has a few things in her wardrobe that I’d never wear. If there is ignominy in being anonymous at the premiere of your own movie, the ladies of Pussy Riot didn’t show it. There they were, without their trademark bright balaclavas, sitting at the back of the Landmark Sunshine Cinema on the Lower East Side on Wednesday evening, awaiting the showing of an HBO documentary called “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer.”
The film, which will be broadcast on Monday, chronicles the rise of Pussy Riot, the Moscow-based activist group, whose 2012 performance of an anti-Kremlin song described as a “punk prayer” inside the main Orthodox cathedral in Moscow attracted international attention. Three of the women were convicted of hooliganism for the 40-second performance; two are still imprisoned. The rest, fewer than a dozen, have carried on, masked crusaders for feminism and free speech.
Their outlaw status has become a rallying cry for dissent in Russia and abroad, backed by the likes of Paul McCartney, Madonna and Amnesty International, and an unexpected display of global girl power.
Without fanfare, two members of the collective slipped into New York in the last week, to help promote the film and meet, undercover, with supporters. It is their first time in America. At the theater, they munched popcorn as a slew of well-heeled New Yorkers and boldface names — Salman Rushdie, Patti Smith — sauntered by. A few guests wore “Free Pussy Riot” T-shirts, oblivious to the still-at-large members in their midst. “Everybody wants to be a cop or fireman,” Bench said. “You guys got the glory job. Nobody wants to be the telephone man.”
